    Categorising Modality in Biomedical Texts

    Get PDF
The accurate recognition of modal information is vital for the correct interpretation of statements. In this paper, we report on the collection a list of words and phrases that express modal information in biomedical texts, and propose a categorisation scheme according to the type of information conveyed. We have performed a small pilot study through the annotation of 202 MEDLINE abstracts according to our proposed scheme. Our initial results suggest that modality in biomedical statements can be predicted fairly reliably though the presence of particular lexical items, together with a small amount of contextual information

Helping Students Make Informed Decisions About Transition Via Web-Based Resources

    Get PDF
Although there are many transitions that occur in a young person’s life, transition from high school to adulthood can be one of the most challenging. This transition requires autonomy and decision-making skills. To support youth in having positive outcomes after high school, it is imperative for teachers to have strategies to guide students in making informed decisions as they begin the transition process. This article provides teachers with strategies and resources to help youth build autonomy, make informed decisions, and gain information via web-based resources to support the transition from high school into postschool life. Steps for building autonomy, evaluating web-based resources, and investigating web-based resources to support transition are included

Building a Bio-Event Annotated Corpus for the Acquisition of Semantic Frames from Biomedical Corpora

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the design and construction of a bio-event annotated corpus which was developed with a specific view to the acquisition of semantic frames from biomedical corpora. We describe the adopted annotation scheme and the annotation process, which is supported by a dedicated annotation tool. The annotated corpus contains 677 abstracts of biomedical research article

Bootstrapping a Verb Lexicon for Biomedical Information Extraction

The accurate extraction of information from texts requires both syntactic and semantic resources. We are developing a verb dictionary for use in the processing of biomedical texts that includes both syntactic subcategorisation frames and semantic event frames, and links them together. In this paper, we describe the acquisition of syntactic subcategorisation frames from a large corpus of abstracts of the subject of E. Coli, together with the extraction of linguistic event frames from a subset of this corpus, in which the biological process of E. coli gene regulation has been linguistically annotated by a group of biologists. Finally, we report on work carried out to link the syntactic and semantic information together, by mapping syntactic arguments of subcategorisation frames to semantic arguments of the event frames

Progress in research on Tourette syndrome

    Get PDF
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a heritable neuropsychiatric disorder commonly complicated by obsessions and compulsions, but defined by frequent unwanted movements (motor tics) and vocalizations (phonic tics) that develop in childhood or adolescence. In recent years, research on TS has progressed rapidly on several fronts. Inspired by the Fifth International Scientific Symposium on Tourette Syndrome, the articles in this special issue review advances in the phenomenology, epidemiology, genetics, pathophysiology, and treatment of TS

This article provides an overview of the dissemination work carried out in META-NET from 2010 until 2015; we describe its impact on the regional, national and international level, mainly with regard to politics and the funding situation for LT topics. The article documents the initiative's work throughout Europe in order to boost progress and innovation in our field.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Ophthalmic simulated surgical competency assessment rubric (Sim-OSSCAR) for trabeculectomy.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND/AIMS: To develop, test and determine whether a surgical-competency assessment tool for simulated glaucoma surgery is valid. METHODS: The trabeculectomy ophthalmic simulated surgical competency assessment rubric (Sim-OSSCAR) was assessed for face and content validity with a large international group of expert eye surgeons. Cohorts of novice and competent surgeons were invited to perform anonymised simulation trabeculectomy surgery, which was marked using the Sim-OSSCAR in a masked fashion by a panel of four expert surgeons. Construct validity was assessed using a Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Krippendorff's alpha was calculated for interobserver reliability. RESULTS: For the Sim-OSSCAR for trabeculectomy, 58 of 67 surgeons (86.6%) either agreed or strongly agreed that the Sim-OSSCAR is an appropriate way to assess trainees' surgical skill. Face validity was rated as 4.04 (out of 5.00). Fifty-seven of 71 surgeons (80.3%) either agreed or strongly agreed that the Sim-OSSCAR contents represented the surgical technique of surgical trabeculectomy. Content validity was rated as 4.00. Wilcoxon rank-sum test showed that competent surgeons perform better than novices (p=0.02). Interobserver reliability was rated >0.60 (Krippendorff's alpha) in 19 of 20 steps of the Sim-OSSCAR. CONCLUSION: The Sim-OSSCAR for trabeculectomy, a newly developed and validated assessment tool for simulation glaucoma surgery, has validity and reliability. It has the potential to play a useful role in ophthalmic surgical education
